Hi all,

I wonder if you can help me again. On my way into work this morning my front wipers stopped wokring. Consulting the manual it says the car may stop them functioning if theres an obstruction to stop motor burn out. As it was -3 outside I presumed it may have been due to water buildup refreezing again. However this lunchtime I have just checked them again and they are still not functioning. I have checked the fuses and that they are free to move. The rear wipers also work but neither the front or back washer does (this may still be due to the jet nozzles being frozen still.. any ideas? Is it likely to be the motor as I have read in other areas? Its still well within warranty but I would prefer the least agro approach if its something I can do.

Cheers

Is it still freezing there? If so, ?

Failure means the car is not roadworthy so call the garage and let them tow it in!

My front wipers stopped working a while ago. I found that I could get them to work if I stood outside the car by the door, got hold of the drivers side wiper, gently pulling it and with the wipers switched to on, turned the ignition and away they went . What happens is the sleeve into which the wiper arms fit into seizes up. I got them working by removing the wiper arms, removing the "seal" and spraying WD40 in and pouring thin oil down into the shaft with the wiper motor turning. Eventually the oil runs down the shaft and gets it going again. How long it will last I don`t know but so far it`s lasted 3 months.

Right guys my car has just come back from repair....

It turned out to be the brown number 34 fuse!

I read the manual and replaced numbers 20 & 24 as they were to do with the wipers and washers... No. 34 reads to be the Instrument panel etc so I dont know why that knocked it out.

To be honest I'm a bit miffed as I tried to replace the fuses and had already bought all the types in case of emergency so to pay

Thanks for that I have just changed the fuze in my alhambra and as with you the wipers burst back into life.

I like you tried the washers several times which must have been the cause of the blown fuze...on the legend on the lid on the box my fuze seems to control a fan ..how odd <_<

thanks for the email

This gets more bizarre! My #34 fuse is red not brown, though it's a current 130TDI Ghia just like bizarrefish's. And it wasn't blown. But my #33 (also red) was blown. That's the aux heater and air con. Replacing this fuse has reinstated the wipers.

This phenomenon of one fuse blowing making other things misbehave is not totally new to me: on a Cavalier a few years back the cigarette lighter fuse blew, unrelated instruments (fuel gauge etc) half gave up the ghost. First I knew of it (other than the pessistic fuel gauge) was when it boiled in traffic, as it was also the fuse for the electric radiator fan. Oops!

On a semi-related subject (well, it's wipers and washers) when I try to wash the rear screen I get a "whoosh" under the passenger seat which I don't remember before. The washer seems a bit half hearted, so maybe there's a constriction or a leak under there. Anyone else had similar?

sounds like the dreaded wet carpet syndrome will soon be occurring! there is a joint in the rear wash pipe in the passenger footwell/sill area

do a shearch for the topic, its been covered in great detail and how to fix it in photo form!

Bizzarefish can't count <_< its fuse 33 and it should be 10A(Red)

2 fuses for wipers (MkII)

before 05/2001 F24 (30A Green), F20 (15A Blue)

after 05/2001 F24 (30A Green), F33 (10A Red)

A brown fuse is only 7.5A and probably why its blown

my wipers stopped, but not fuses (may be a cause rather than a symptom)

the spindle on the wiper is machined too tightly to the sleeve, and seizes up if not oiled up. I checked vw/seat/ford as i was advised to get a whole new wiper system (at
